Born in Virginia, Alexander T. Gayle (1815-1857) married Frances A. Sutherland. He trained as a civil engineer and operated the brig Argo between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Galveston, Texas. After moving to Texas in 1836, he raised cattle and sheep as well as bred horses with the help of several slaves.
